Skagit Humane Society Auction

On Saturday, April 6, 2013, the Skagit Humane Society hosted its 48th annual Black Cat Auction. I went to work on a video about auctioneers, but while I was there I took some pictures of the event. Some of them are more focused on the auctioneers, but others are moments captured of event attendees.

Update: I found out from Tom Pasma, the auctioneer, that the auction raised more than $40,000!

Here are just a few. Enjoy!

It costs $50 to sponsor a pet, which entails paying for an ad for the pet in the Skagit Valley Herald. One hundred percent of the pets that are sponsored in the newspaper end up getting adopted.

Blood is Vital

Each issue of Klipsun Magazine has a different theme and the cover generally reflects the overarching meaning of the theme. The next issue, titled Vital, explores a variety of phenomenon that are vital to different people.

As photo editor, I was designated the task of taking the cover image. My mind jumped to water when I thought about vitals for life. Then blood came next, as a vital to all animals. I played around with a few ideas for wraparound cover images, and I came up with the pictures you see below.

Neither of these ideas ended up being the final cover, but I still liked the photos. Look for the next issue coming out soon at Western Washington University and in Bellingham to see the final cover image and read all the wonderful stories inside!

Trap the music

Three DJ duos stood at the front of Glow, sharing the sound space to prompt people to dance. Neon lights bounced off the empty dance floor, until the music seeped under the growing crowd’s skin and they started to shake. Glow Nightclub came alive to the mix of techno and rap music, also know as trap music. People threw their arms in the air, feet shuffled on the floor, butts bounced. The trap music DJs were doing their job; playing the music they loved to get people pumped up.

This was the scene I walked into when I went to take photos for an article in Klipsun Magazine. It was fun to weave in and out of the dancing crowd, and get pictures behind the stage. I think I managed to get a wide variety of images, which is always something I strive for. What ended up being printed in the magazine was limited by page space, so here are some of my personal favorites from the shoot. Enjoy!
